SendVia is a Thunderbird add-on that allows to select or create the SMTP server that will be used for sending the current message. Inspiration comes from the smtpswitch extension, but it fixes some of its weaknesses.
News- 2010-12-10: Version 1.0.2 is available! It improves the management of SMTP servers, cooperates with other addons that modify the `Send' action and adds a useful status line to composer windows. Download it! If no negative comment is posted here, I'll upload it on AMO in a few days.
- 2010-08-06: Version 1.0.1 is available! It fixes a bug that prevented the definition of new SMTP servers. Download it now! Write a review for SendVia.
- 2010-07-20: Version 1.0.0 is available! Compatibles with Thunderbird 3.1. Fixes small bugs and uses a new software architecture in order to avoid name clashes with other addons.
- 2009-10-07: Version 0.9.6 is available! Fixes a bug that prevented send menu to appear when using the default SMTP server.
- 2009-03-24: Version 0.9.5 is available! Compatible with Thunderbird 3b2.
- 2009-02-11: Version 0.9.4 is available! It fixes some bugs and add a status line.
- 2009-01-28: Version 0.9.3 is available. It is compatible with Thunderbird 3.0b1.
- SendVia needs reviews to become public (it is currently classified as `experimental'). Please, post such reviews as comments on this blog: it is probably easier than on AMO (addons.mozilla.org). A review must be longer than simply "it does work"!
Usage
Once installed and activated in Thunderbird, compose a new message and have a look at the "Send" button. It is now equipped with a menu looking like this:

nice addons, too bad is not for FF3!
ReplyDeleteis it hard to make it ff3 compatible?

Could you help-me please ?
Hello,
ReplyDeleteA bit more information would be useful...
- You have only one identity, and 4 servers, right?
- Do all the servers appear correctly in the Send menu?
With this information, I'll try to reproduce the behavior, and fix a possible bug.
Thanks in advance.
No, i have 4 identity, and 4 smtp servers..
ReplyDeleteYes, i have the 4 servers in the Send Menu.. with the default servers who was selected.
Thanks !!
In order to eliminate possible interactions with other addons, could you please try to create a new profile, with SendVia as the only addon, and tell us whether Thunderbird behaves the same or not?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help..

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'll try to reproduce this. What version of Thunderbird are you using?
Thanks,
ReplyDelete2.0.0.19 ..
After some test, it's the same with thunderbird 3 Beta 1 ..
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have uploaded a new version 0.9.4 on addons.mozilla.org. (You may need to ask for the listing of all versions; AMO may need some time to update SendVia's page.)
It fixes this bug and adds a status line showing which server is being used when sending the message.
Thanks for your feedback. Enjoy!
Many thanks !!
ReplyDeleteIt work :-)
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI do not seem to be able to download the last version for thunderbird.
Thanks
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThe latest version of sendvia is available at https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/thunderbird/addon/10471
You need to register to download it (just a matter of giving a name and a password), like any other experimental addon. Once you've registered and been using sendvia for a few days, you may then write a short review for it on the download page. This way, sendvia may change status and become fully public.
I don't see any other way for having reviews. Sorry about that.
All the best.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteAny version for Thunderbird Beta 2 ?
Many thanks for your job !
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have just uploaded version 0.9.5 to addons.mozilla.org. It is compatible with TB 3b2.
All the best.
I managed to install this fine extension to Postbox - can you update your install.rdf to accept also Postbox?
ReplyDeleteI cannot post these lines to this comment. But target application is Postbox and minVersion 1.0b13 and maxVersion 1.0.*
Could you please make this addon compatible with TB 3.0b3
ReplyDeleteThanks
Version 0.9.8 should be accepted by Postbox, TB 3.0b3 and 3.1a1pre.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
The extension is great, that's a nice thing and pretty useful. However, since it's licensed under GPL_v2, I wonder where the source code is. It would be a lot easier to keep pace with the new TB releases (alpha, beta, etc.) if we could access the code. Can you provide us a link to the source?
ReplyDeleteCan it be fixed to support TB 3.1 now that it reached a beta stage?
Good job!
Hi NorthWestMan. Thanks for your comment.
ReplyDeleteSendVia is distributed as source: simply unzip the .xpi file and you're done.
I'll test TB3.1 in the next days and update SendVia.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteDo you have more information about 3.2Beta compatibility ?
Thanks
Hello,
ReplyDeleteIt seems that your extension is desactived by thunderbird 3.1 (because of incompatibility). Do you have an estimation on when a new compatible version will be available ? Thx !
Hello,
ReplyDeleteVersion 1.0.0 is out! Compatible with TB3.1. Please write reviews and comments on https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/10471/
This will help SendVia to become public and have a broader audience.
Thanks in advance.
Hi.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for a way to select the "from" account when sending messages. Perhaps there is a add-on for it or a nice idea for an improvement of your add-on? I can select it manually, I know, but sometimes I forget it. So it must have an option for selecting the from address mandatory before being able to send it. Same for the SMTP server, though...
I've been using your addon for a couple of months now and I love it.
ReplyDeleteI have one little problem with it, though. I'm also using Tagzilla (http://xsidebar.mozdev.org/modifiedmailnews.html#tagzilla) which opens a window for adding a tagline at the end of the message whenever I press send (or sendVia).
However, if I DON'T add the tagline (that is, I press 'CLOSE' in the tagzilla window), sendvia always send the message using the default SMTP server.
I'm using TB 3.0.10 with sendVia 1.0.1 and tagzilla 0.066.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.
Regards.
Hi El Baby,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. Next version of sendvia should (1.0.2) fix this. Could you give it a try (https://sites.google.com/site/dooblesix/sendvia-1.0.2.xpi.gz?attredirects=0) and tell me how it goes?
If it is okay, I'll release it on AMO.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
ReplyDeletei downloaded thunderbird 5.0b1 this morning, and your usefull plugin is not compatible with this version.
Have you plan to do an update for this version ?
Phil
Hi Phil,
ReplyDeleteYes I'll test sendvia in TB 5.0 in the next days. A quick look lets me think that it could be sufficient to modify the `maxVersion' field in the file install.rdf (set it to 5.0, for instance).
Note that I don't claim that it will work perfectly.
More in a few days.
